Texas BBQ German Potato Salad Bratwurst Inspired by Pope Benedict XVI

For this weeks bread-less dish I wanted to create something in honor of Pope Benedict XVI who has just recently passed away. He was German born and my brain immediately went to delicious German brats! Along with this flavorful meat, we’ll be preparing German potato salad, making this colorful dish perfect for grilling.

Ingredients

  • 1 Package of Brats (Any kind is fine)

  • White Potatoes

  • 2 Tbsp White Wine Vinegar

  • 1/3 Cup Fresh Chopped Herbs (Parsley, Chives, Thyme)

  • 3oz Chopped Bacon

  • Salt and Pepper to Taste

Fire Up The Grill!

If I’m being honest, pan searing the brats is perfectly delicious. But if you really want your brat dish to pop, you have to use the grill…and it has to be over charcoal! Add your charcoal to the pit and light it up. While we let the coals get hot, we prepare the potato salad. The interesting thing about German Potato Salad is that it is served hot instead of American style which is served cold.

Bless Your Lucky Starch!

We're going to make this whole plate Texas Style! So, peel your taters, cut them into cubes or slices, and place them on a square of aluminum foil. Add a splash of water to help with the steaming process, fold them up and place them on one side of the grill.

While the potatoes are cooking, chop fresh thyme, parsley and green onions and put them to the side.

Place 2-3 slices of your favorite bacon on the grill, its best to use a thick cut bacon when placing on a bbq pit grill.

Take the bacon off the grill when crispy and chop them up!

Once the potatoes are done, place into a bowl and gently mix in the fresh herbs and chopped bacon.

EVENLY pour in the white wine vinegar being careful not to concentrate the vinegar into one area of the spuds. Salt and Pepper to taste, then head to the grill!

Brat the Good Stuff!

We saved the brats for last, because it only takes a few minutes to cook. So don’t wait, throw them on the grill! 3-4 minutes on each side should capture that smokey flavor and when you’re done, plate the brats, potato salad, and add sauerkraut if you want the full German experience!

Say a prayer for the Holy Father and enjoy!

Prayer For The Dead

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen. May almighty God bless us with his peace and strength, the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit
